Watchung Warren Rotary Supports the Dictionary Project

The Watchung Warren Rotary Club has been a long time supporter of The Dictionary Project, whose goal is to assist all students to become good writers, active readers and creative thinkers.

This year, our club was able to provide dictionaries for the third graders at Angelo Tomasso, Central, Mount Horeb, Bayberry, and Woodland Schools.

Below are just a few spectacular examples of the many thank you letters we have received in our years of supporting the Project!

Celebrating 60 Years of Service Above Self  - Founding Member Bob Aznar

Bob and Rose Aznar at the 50th Anniversary of the Watchung Warren Rotary

The Watchung Warren Rotary Club has been blessed with a plethora of influential, innovative, and dedicated volunteers over the years, but few have put forth the time, effort, and passion that Bob Aznar has since the founding of the Watchung Warren Rotary in 1961. As our secretary for over nearly four combined decades, Bob has served his community and fellow Rotarians at an aspirational level for decades, and we want to express our sincere gratitude for the years of service and countless lives he has influenced over his time as a member.

Bob moved to Watchung from Elizabeth, New Jersey in 1959 when he and his business partner opened their original community pharmacy near the Watchung Circle. Eager to immerse himself in this new area, meet new people, and give back to his new community, Bob began looking for ways that he could both help the town grow, as well as grow along with it.

Inspired by the Plainfield Rotary, Bob helped found the then-provisional Watchung Rotary Club as an original charter member on November 10, 1961. Ten years later, the club would go on to incorporate Warren Township, and thus become the Watchung Warren Rotary Club. For Bob, what began as a simple desire to serve his new community evolved into a sixty-year commitment to making a difference through Rotary, both internationally and in his own backyard.

As secretary, Bob has served as the backbone of the Watchung Warren Rotary Club for decades. He has been diligently collecting dues, recording meeting minutes, and acting as club liaison to Rotary International for nearly 40 combined years. Even after officially retiring as a pharmacist in 1999, Bob has continued to keep his commitment to the Club. He is currently 17 years in to his second term as secretary after serving in the position uninterrupted from 1966 to 1987.

Over the years, few Rotarians have done such a phenomenal job of living the guiding principals of Rotary as Bob has. From serving his community through his profession, to building peace and goodwill through service, Bob has not only helped grow his community and this club, but has notably helped shape the Watchung Warren area into a beautiful place to live. Thank you, Bob! We cannot express our gratitude for your efforts enough!

If you would like to have the opportunity to meet Bob of any of our other wonderful members, please feel welcome to attend a Club meeting!

Saving lives in Ghana

What is it like taking a large team to Africa?  It has probably been one of the most rewarding experiences in my life. In mid February, I began leading Rotary members from all over the East Coast of the United States through Ghana. I’ve tried to give the team a warm Ghanaian welcome like I’ve received on my earlier trips. A large trip is a real blessing because each person sees Ghana and our work in a different way.

Finding Safe Haven

For years, Angalia Bianca had slept in abandoned buildings throughout Chicago. She stole. She did drugs. She spent time in and out of jail for forgery, theft, trespassing, and possession of narcotics. But after she landed in prison for the seventh time, something changed -- Bianca knew she wanted a better life. She just didn’t know how to make it happen.

Helping people with disabilities make their own music

Music has been an important part of leading an ordinary life for students at the Music School for Children With Disabilities in Honor of Paul Harris in Lublin, Poland. Founded by Rotary members, the school serves 20 students with various disabilities, including Down syndrome, autism, and visual impairments. The Rotary Club of Lublin-Centrum-Maria Curie-Sklodowska has provided funding with help from Rotary Foundation Matching Grants and the Henryk Wieniawski Musical Society, which houses the school.

India celebrates three years without polio

Throughout India and around the world, Rotary clubs are celebrating a major milestone: India has gone three years without a new case of polio. The last reported case was a two-year-old girl in West Bengal on 13 January 2011. To mark this historic triumph, Rotary clubs illuminated landmarks and iconic structures throughout the country with four simple but powerful words, "India is polio free."
